Matt Hancock has confirmed that surge testing will be rolled out to curb the spread of the Indian variant of the Covid-19 coronavirus.
Labour’s Jonathan Ashworth said: “As of today, UK COG (Covid Genomics UK) reports 135 cases of B1617 in the UK, 115 in the last 28 days – the fastest growing variant in the UK in the last three weeks.” ....

Daily deaths from Covid have fallen below the average numbers from road accidents, latest official figures show. 
Just four deaths from Covid-19 were recorded across the UK on Monday, compared with an average of five fatalities a day on the roads.
MPs are now urging the Government to go faster in releasing Britain from lockdown – accusing ministers of following “dates not data”.
It came as figures showed that three quarters of those aged 75 and over have now been fully vaccinated against Covid. In total, 10 million people across the UK have now had both doses, an achievement which Boris Johnson hailed as “remarkable”. ....
