NEW DELHI: India passed 300,000 confirmed coronavirus deaths on Monday, fatalities remaining high despite the country flattening out the number of new cases in its devastating pandemic wave.
It became the third country after the United States and Brazil to cross 300,000 deaths. For several weeks the country of 1.3 billion has been hitting record daily rises in infections and fatalities, that have overwhelmed its healthcare system.
While the crisis has eased in major cities such as New Delhi and Mumbai, the coronavirus is still spreading in rural areas and southern states. Another 4,454 deaths in 24 hours the second-highest daily figure so far took India’s toll to 303,720. It has added the last 50,000 deaths in under two weeks, according to government figures. Experts said the real numbers of deaths and infections, now 26.7 million, were probably much higher than the official ....

ULAN BATOR, May 21 (Xinhua) Mongolia added 629 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours after 6,823 tests had been conducted across the country, the health ministry said Friday.
Mongolia has confirmed a total of 51,247 COVID-19 cases so far, including more than 50,700 locally transmitted ones. Among all patients, 45,145 have recovered from the disease so far.
Meanwhile, five more deaths were reported in the country in the past day, taking the nationwide count to 253, said the ministry.
The Asian country launched a nationwide COVID-19 vaccination campaign in late February, aiming to cover at least 60 percent of its population of 3.3 million. ....

HANOI, May 21 (Xinhua) Vietnam reported 24 new COVID-19 cases from 6 p.m. local time Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday, raising the total confirmed cases in the country to 4,833, according to its Ministry of Health.
The new cases were all locally transmitted and detected in northern localities, including 15 in Bac Giang province, six in Dien Bien province, two in Hai Duong province and one in Bac Ninh province.
All of them are contacts of previously confirmed patients or linked to the clusters of infections in the localities.
As many as 2,689 patients have so far recovered, and over 129,500 people are being quarantined and monitored. ....

GAZA: Facebook Inc set up a 24-7 special operations centre last week to respond to content posted on its platform about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict amid violence in the region, the company said on Wednesday.
Misinformation, hate speech and calls for violence about the conflict have circulated on social media platforms amid the deadly fighting.
This operations centre allows us to closely monitor the situation so we can remove content that violates our community standards faster, while also addressing possible errors in enforcement, Monika Bickert, Facebook s vice president of content policy, told reporters on a conference call. ....
