On the day she appeared in court for the first time in her life, Leena Ghani found it difficult not to squirm in front of the judge. She realised within five minutes that the cushioned seat she was on was infested with bedbugs. You could sit right on the edge of your seat and hope to be spared, or, as she shows me on the day I accompany her to Karachi’s city court in February, you give it a good thump. That was her second lesson. The first: she was dressed entirely inappropriately at that appearance, in a comfortable ....
Flawed law May 8, 2021 The Women Lawyers Forum, a component of the Women s Action Forum, has identified dozens of flaws in the ordinances against rape and crime passed by the PTI government in 2020. Regarding rape, in the first place, the WLF points out that in this ordinance, as well as in the one pertaining to crime, there is a great deal of overlap with the Pakistan Penal Code, as well as other aspects of the constitution. It also asks why, when a democratically elected parliament exists, it is necessary to use ordinances to pass laws rather than allow parliament to debate and discuss them. ....
Karachi May 6, 2021 Commenting on the federal governmentâs Anti-Rape (Investigation and Trial) Ordinance 2020 and the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance 2020, the Womenâs Action Forum (WAF) and the Women Lawyersâ Association (WLA) have expressed their opposition to legislation via ordinances, and highlighted how the two ordinances contain several overlaps with amendments already enacted in 2016 by the parliament, and other existing laws. Ben Cline recently put an eye-popping taxpayer price tag on the Green New Deal - a bold but vague climate change-centered plan that has been roundly condemned by Republicans. “It crushes jobs, costs an average American household almost $700,000 through 2029,” Cline, R-Va., said of the proposal during a brief floor speech on April 22. Think about it. The average annual household income in 2019, the latest year available, was $68,700. The average household cost of the Green New Deal, according to Cline’s statement, would be about $75,000 a year. Cline is essentially saying every penny of earnings by an average household will be swallowed by the plan. ....
