Performers Sought for Virtual Juneteenth Celebration

The Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs is looking for performers for the upcoming Juneteenth Celebration.
Vocalists, bands, poets, dancers, choirs, and musicians can apply to be part of the upcoming, virtual event.
The 2021 event will premiere on Facebook and West Virginia Public Broadcasting on Saturday, June 19.
Juneteenth commemorates the 1865 announcement by Union Army Gen. Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom from slavery in Texas.
President Lincoln s Emancipation Proclamation had outlawed slavery almost two and a half years earlier but enforcement there was slow and inconsistent before Granger s announcement.
Entries will be accepted through May 15.

Editorial: Keep moving forward on expanded telehealth in Minnesota
The pandemic ushered in changes that enhanced patients access, convenience.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced sweeping changes in how we work, with many workers doing their jobs remotely for much of the past year.
A swift though lesser-remarked-on transformation happened as well in medical care. As lockdowns loomed, state and federal regulators eased restrictions on telehealth. That led to more virtual visits in Minnesota and elsewhere, with doctors and patients communicating via video or a phone call in lieu of a clinic appointment. A year later, there s a timely debate at the Minnesota Capitol over whether to maintain telehealth expansion measures, which are set to expire 60 days after the end of the peacetime COVID emergency. The answer should be yes ....

It took some time for Vincent Wade-Robinson to come around to the idea of having his name inscribed on a memorial. His experience had been painful. He didn’t want to dwell upon it.
“How can you describe torture?” he asked me. “Every day I look in the mirror I have that scar across my nose. That’s my reminder of what happened to me.”
But he eventually decided that a memorial would be an important public acknowledgment that he and others were wronged. Five years later, he’s still waiting. ....

In the past few months, I have written 13 articles on social issues that have arisen from what I call the culture of the “White-West.” Then, January 6th happened. The Hill published an article a few days later titled “Pelosi says rioters chose their ‘whiteness’ over democracy,” and she is right, but no one wants to address the race issue and the mainstream prefers to keep it a political matter. The White moto is relatively simple and has been the same for centuries: ....
