Even prior to the pandemic large stores like M&S and BHS etc were closing some of their stores, and as a result of the pandemic even more stores are closing. I am no longer able to pop into the shops and use their toilets as most local stores do not provide toilet facilities. Cafes do not want you to use their toilet unless you make a purchase, and when you are desperate, you cannot stand there waiting to be served when you need to go. The last time I was in Hilldene, over a year ago, the automatic toilet was in a very disgusting state, where people had made a mess and vomited over the floor and toilet, with a strong undesirable odour too. I had thought it was self cleaning! ....
Many years ago now I did A-level sociology and discovered that the greatest recipients of taxpayers’ money were the middle classes. This doesn’t happen by accident: it’s the result of policies brought in by self-serving local and national government. This proposed change to housing application policy is shameful. All councillors representing local residents should vote against it and stop Havering becoming a borough that works against those most genuinely in need. Time to see sense on house-building Cllr Graham Williamson, South Hornchurch ward and co-chair PRESERVE, writes: It is true that Havering and other boroughs have failed to meet their so-called housing needs (Borough failing to meet new homes targets, latest figures show, Recorder 29/01) but the picture is not all it seems. ....

Havering s Extinction Rebellion group campaigned outside the town hall in 2019 in the hope that the council would declare a climate emergency. But it didn t. - Credit: April Roach Havering Council will consider again whether to declare a climate emergency, almost two years after councillors first rejected the idea. At a meeting last night (February 18), councillors were told a newly-formed “climate change topic group” would “consider what action, if any” the council should take. Other neighbouring boroughs, such as Waltham Forest and Redbridge, were quick to declare a climate emergency in 2019. However Havering councillors at a full council meeting rejected the idea. ....
A woman in her sixties became the first person in Havering to die of Covid-19. Queen’s Hospital said she had suffered significant other health conditions. But as the country went into lockdown , the crisis started to bring out the best in our communities. Volunteers teamed up to help those in need through Mutual Aid groups, and restaurants forced to close delivered food instead to NHS workers.
April A plea was made to nail bars, beauty salons and tattoo artists to donate their protective equipment for NHS staff after the coronavirus outbreak created a national shortage. Havering Council called on the businesses to either donate masks and gloves or sell them at cost price. ....
A community Covid-19 testing site has opened at Elm Park Library. - Credit: Paul Bennett A testing centre for people without Covid symptoms has opened at Elm Park Library. The site, in St Nicholas Avenue, is being exclusively used for lateral flow tests, which provide results within 30 minutes and identify the virus in people without symptoms. It is being operated on a walk-in, first come first serve basis, with eight testing booths, and is the first community testing site operating in Havering. Those eligible to use the site, open daily from 10am to 7pm, are people who travel to work on public transport, carers for the elderly or vulnerable and tradespeople who visit homes as part of their work. ....
