In den kommenden Jahren sollen daher umfangreiche Investitionen vorgenommen werden. „Wir sprechen hier über hunderte Millionen Euro“, schätzt Behrends. Ziel sei es, einerseits den Kohlendioxid (CO2)-Ausstoß der Raffinerie in der Produktion zu senken und andererseits zunehmend klimaneutrale Produkte herzustellen. So hat Total-Energies ein Projekt initiiert, um das Methanol in Leuna weitgehend klimaneutral herzustellen.
