Stephen Strasburg injury: Nationals pitcher to have surgery, done for season

Jul 27, 2021 Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg will undergo surgery to address his neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome and will miss the rest of the season, team manager Dave Martinez announced on Tuesday.  The surgery will address the nerve issue Strasburg has been dealing with in his neck. Martinez is hopeful he will return in time for Spring Training in February.  Strasburg was initially placed on the injured list in August because of a nerve issue in his hand but has since suffered multiple setbacks.  The 2019 World Series MVP has only played in five games this season and hasn t pitched since June 1. In those five appearances, he is 1–2 and has a 4.57 ERA.

Nats beat Phillies 6-4 after Turner leaves because of COVID

“I found out right after he scored,” manager Dave Martinez said. “I had to pull him right out of the game. He’s got to get isolated right away. Now, he’ll get tested and from there we’ll see what happens.” Josh Harrison doubled and had two hits for the Nationals, who snapped a five-game losing streak but still have won only twice in their past 15 games. While Turner will miss time because of MLB’s COVID-19 protocols, the Nationals will be without right-hander Stephen Strasburg the rest of the season. Martinez said before the game that the pitcher would have season-ending neck surgery on Wednesday.

Nationals Strasburg to have season-ending neck surgery

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Stephen Strasburg will have season-ending neck surgery, Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Tuesday, ending another frustrating year for Washington’s 2019 World Series hero. The three-time All-Star right-hander felt discomfort after a 27-pitch bullpen session last week and saw a specialist on Monday. Strasburg, who is 1-2 with a 4.57 ERA in five starts this season, was diagnosed with neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome and will be operated on by Dr. Greg Pearl in Dallas on Wednesday, Martinez said. “He’s down, he’s frustrated,” Martinez said. “Hopefully after this procedure is done, it’s the next hurdle, recovering and then starting to rehab as soon as he possibly can.”
