STOKE-ON-TRENT, United Kingdom - Canada got a pre-Olympic confidence boost Tuesday with a 2-0 win over England in a women s soccer friendly.
Evelyne Viens and Nichelle Prince capitalized on defensive miscues and Canada blunted the England attack the rest of the way for the victory. Canada did it without captain Christine Sinclair, who did not dress after limping off the field in the first half last Friday in a win over Wales.
Rich Laverty looks at the tricky task ahead for Hege Riise as the head coach prepares to select her Team GB squad from the home nations for Tokyo 2020.
Despite no official confirmation and no certainty of anything in the world anymore, until told otherwise, the anticipation of the approaching Tokyo Olympics grows day by day, especially for those of us following the women’s game.
Any squad announcement for a major tournament is one of the most anticipated events of the football calendar, I remember a room crammed full with people at Canada House in 2015 to hear who Mark Sampson had selected for the World Cup, and that was before post-bronze medal mania!
NIKITA PARRIS has been called up to the England squad for their upcoming internationals against France and Canada.
Parris had initially been left out of the squad due to a number of positive coronavirus cases at her club Lyon, but has since tested negative and been cleared to join her teammates.
Interim head coach Hege Riise said: “It is the first opportunity I have had to work with Nikita in person and I am delighted to have her on camp with us.
“It is a good opportunity to watch her closely like I have been with all the other players who have joined up on camp and to have her available for selection against two tough opponents.”
