Lisa Fagundes is normally a librarian at the San Francisco Public Library. But starting last April, she and thousands of other city and state workers were redeployed to become contact tracers, calling people who may have been exposed to the virus. The Massachusetts Audubon Society has long managed its land in western Massachusetts as crucial wildlife habitat. Nature lovers flock to these forests to enjoy bird-watching and quiet hikes, with the occasional bobcat or moose sighting.

There’s a long history of government agencies damming spectacular canyons, choking off rivers, obliterating fish populations and cutting off access to Indigenous peoples.
