Brigman navigates ACS through tumultuous pandemic year

NEWLAND — It would be a gross understatement to say that the past 14 months have been a difficult period in communities worldwide. As society has had to face the realities of a global pandemic that has enveloped virtually aspect of day-to-day living since its onset in March 2020, every walk of life in its own way has embraced the college basketball tournament adage of “survive and advance,” with the goal of emerging on the other side of COVID-19 and returning to as close a semblance of normalcy as possible. ....

ECDC pursues new avenues to attract businesses


AVERY COUNTY — The Economic Development Committee convened for its monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 30, in which members discussed ways to be attract businesses to the county, as well as updates on new businesses.
Updates on the changes to the websites of Avery County and the Chamber of Commerce’s websites are ongoing. Visitors to the county’s page will be linked directly to the chamber’s site when they click on the link that reads “Economic Development.” The chamber has been focused on improving the information in order to better attract businesses, entrepreneurs, families and those who grew up in the area back to the region. ....

Vaccine eligibility opens for Group 4 in NC


AVERY COUNTY — Avery County is now offering vaccines to people in group four, which includes adults with underlying health conditions that puts them at risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
Other individuals from groups one through three also remain eligible for the vaccine, including those who are health care workers, staff and residents at long-term care facilities, anyone 65 years of age or older and frontline essential workers.
Underlying health conditions for people in group four can include but is not limited to asthma, cancer, history of strokes, diabetes, heart conditions and other ailments. To see the full list of conditions that has been identified by the Centers for Disease Control, click to ....
