Though there s much excitement and renewed enthusiasm for the women s game, the objectification, pay disparities and opportunity gap have taken its toll. Industry leaders say they re committed to righting the wrongs that have long held female surfers back in the male-dominated sport. My dream was that some young maniac from Costa Rica or Indo would charge forth in Japan and storm the Citadel blow away all the CT stars who’ve managed to smuggle themselves under various guises into the Olympics. Teach those superheroes a lesson, and cover their grommet selves in glory in the process. To me it just seemed the finest of all possible results from this first appearance of surfing in the Olympic Games…proof that competitive surfing, in this environment at least, might still be an open door. Duke Kahanamoku had been an outsider at the Stockholm Games in 1912, and he won. Why not now, in 2021? ....
