Being mission-driven has helped Indiana Donor Network earn a sixth straight Top Workplaces nod.
Everybody is passionate about the work they do, said multicultural community outreach coordinator Elliott Stubblefield, and that defines the organization’s hallmark collaborative culture.
“Our ultimate goal is to save lives, so we really don’t have time to be focused on anything else,” Stubblefield said.
He works closely with minority populations to increase organ donation in communities of color and among other underserved groups.
“We feel that everyone deserves that opportunity to receive organs,” Stubblefield said. “We also want to make sure people know that it’s important that they donate, too.” ....

Muscle weakness in patients with Becker disease is caused by unusual electrical activity in muscle fibres termed plateau potentials that make them temporarily inactive, says a study published today in
eLife.
An understanding of these mechanisms and the ion channels involved may help the search for more effective therapies for weakness in Becker disease and other muscle diseases, and help understand how electrical activity is regulated in muscles.
Recessive myotonia congenita, also known as Becker disease, is a heritable skeletal muscle disease caused by mutated chloride channels in the muscles that do not work properly. People with the condition experience a phenomenon called myotonia whereby the muscles are hyperexcitable, meaning they are more sensitive than usual to activation. This results in stiff muscles that struggle to relax after being used. ....

One such entity: Michigan Secretary of State. Residents had a high level of difficulty setting an appointment before license plates or driver’s licenses expired, unable to get a time slot until weeks or months after expiration.
Although some area residents continue to have difficulty, many who responded to a recent inquiry by the Sturgis Journal said the process is getting easier, although with occasional hiccups.
According to michigan.gov/sos, customers may make an appointment up to six months in advance or for the next day. ....
