Here s who s running for election in the Tri-Town

By Aidan Pollard   Town elections are coming up in May for Marion, Mattapoisett and Rochester, and candidates are starting to submit their intent. Town Election in Marion is on May 14, and seats are availabe on the Board of Health, Board of Assessors, Board of Selectmen, Planning Board, Marion Open Space Acquisition Commission, and the Marion School Committee. Two spots each are up for election on the Marion School Committee and Planning Board. Board Vice Chair Andrew Davis and Kristen St. Don Campbell who resigned are up on the Planning Board. Michelle Ouellette Smith and April Rios are up on the School Committee.

Portugese is coming back to ORRHS

Aidan Pollard Jan 20, 2021 The program will be available for ninth and 10th grade students, with the potential to hire a full-time teacher for the development of a full four-year program.  Old Rochester Regional high schoolers will be able to learn Portuguese again, after the School Committee approved a plan to reinstate classes in the language at a Jan. 20 meeting.  At first, classes would only be available for ninth and 10th grade students. The district may choose to hire a full-time teacher who would develop a full four-year program. Old Rochester Regional High School Principal Michael Devoll said that he envisions the school’s next language teacher hire will be certified in both Spanish and Portuguese. 

Students secure dual enrollment course inclusion in GPAs

Aidan Pollard Dec 15, 2020 Old Rochester Regional High School students were able to convince the ORR School Committee to let their dual enrollment classes count toward grade point averages at a Dec. 9 meeting.  Dual enrollment classes count toward a student’s transcript, but are take at community colleges rather than with teachers from ORR. Before the motion passed, the courses counted neither toward students’ GPAs nor class rank. Students, supported by Principal Michael Devoll, said that wasn’t fair when dual enrollment can be just as rigorous as an Advanced Placement course. Those classes count toward both GPAs and class rank. 

ORR school committee votes away foreign language requirement

But with concerns about the high school’s limited language offerings and after an impassioned argument by committee member Jim Muse, the requirement was removed.  Foreign language requirements at the Old Rochester Regional High School will be no more after a Dec. 9 decision by the ORR School Committee.  The high school was supposed to implement a foreign language requirement starting with this year’s Freshman class of 2024.
