The name Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) often appears on lists of African-descended composers, but in truth I don’t know that I’d ever heard any of his compositions, certainly not in live performance. Have you, Reader?
A new CD has just appeared from Azica Records called
UNCOVERED Volume 1 that is entirely dedicated to his music, and at 79 minutes’ duration, it’s a generous sampling. It contains three early works for string quartet,
Fantasiestücke (Fantasy Pieces) op. 5 from 1895, and two quintets: one in G minor with the quartet and piano, op. 1 from 1893, and the other in F sharp minor with clarinet, op. 10 from 1906. ....

The Czech News Agency has reported that the new Chief Public Health Officer for the Czech Republic will be the current director of the Moravian-Silesian Regional Public Health Department, Pavla Svrčinová, but its brief announcement of that news failed to mention that in October, Svrčinová shared a racist joke on her Facebook profile in association with the Government s measures to fight COVID-19. Whether anti-Romani racism is meant to be the new style of communications to induce the public in the Czech Republic to comply wit ....

On what would have been her birthday, there is no better place to start with our count of incredible aviation pioneers for International Women’s Day than with Beatrice Shilling. Educated at Manchester University, Shilling’s discipline was within the aeronautical engineering department. This had been her dream from the age of just 14, when she had bought herself a motorbike. Receiving her Bachelors degree in 1932, she stayed at the university to achieve her Master of Science degree in Mechanical engineering. Pavla Svrčinová, who has been tapped to take up the role of Chief Public Health Officer in the Czech Republic, has apologized to Romani people for sharing a racist joke featuring Romani stereotypes on her Facebook profile. She was contacted by Czech Government Human Rights Commissioner Helena Válková with a request for an explanation after the news broke.
 
According to Válková, the two had a telephone conversation during which Svrčinová apologized for the entire matter and asked the Human Rights Commissioner to convey her apology to all members of the Czech Government Council for Romani Minority Affairs.   I would like to hereby assure you that the placement of that post on my Facebook page was not intenti ....
