When a Museum Feels Like Home

Cartoon by Karen Sneider
About Titian, what can be said after you say that he is the finest pure painter ever? Susanna Kaysen, the author of “Girl, Interrupted,” surmises that the subject of “Portrait of a Man in a Red Cap” (circa 1510) “looks to the left, into the past.” Reading that, I see it. The other Titian portrait is of the artist’s best friend and tireless promoter, Pietro Aretino poet, connoisseur, power broker, feared satirist, author of popular devotional literature and pornography, intimate of rulers including the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, and altogether one of the most interesting men of the sixteenth century. (I’m acquainted with Aretino from a bounteous 2012 biography, “Titian: His Life,” by Sheila Hale.) Turning to the Bellini (circa 1476-1478), we behold St. Francis standing outside his cave in a rustic landscape with meadowed sheep nearby and mountains and noble buildings in the distance. He looks skyward and holds out his open hands i ....

Great Big Art Exhibition invites locked-down Brits to put creativity on show

First published on Thu 28 Jan 2021 08.01 EST
Some of British art’s biggest names, including Antony Gormley, Sonia Boyce and Anish Kapoor, are encouraging Britons to turn their front windows into a gallery as part of a nationwide initiative to create a “magical patchwork of creativity”.
The Great Big Art Exhibition was launched on Thursday by Gormley, who is the first artist to choose a theme for people at home to be inspired by as they create work to contribute to what organisers are calling the nation’s largest ever exhibition.
Gormley chose the theme of animals for participants to riff on, and people are encouraged to make their artworks out of what they have at hand. The results – be they paintings, sculptures or something less traditional – are to be placed on a front porch, balcony or window. ....

What do Victoria Beckham, George Condo and Jenny Saville have in common? The answer is that they all share a love of Old Masters like Rembrandt, Jean Siméon Chardin and Antoine van Dyck.
The artistes, writers and cultural figures talk about what draws them to these European painters in a new art book, published Jan 26 by The Frick Collection.
While the renewed interest in Old Masters has been significant in recent years, the works of these artists have always been central to The Frick Collection. Now, the New York museum has invited over 60 international personalities to talk about an artwork in its collection that has moved, challenged, puzzled, or inspired them. ....

Read what Jenny Saville, George Condo and Victoria Beckham have to say about their favourite Old Master paintings

Sixty-two cultural figures have contributed a text about their favourite work of art in the Frick Collection for a new publication,
The Sleeve Should Be Illegal & Other Reflections on Art at the Frick. The book, published this month, was brought together in part to mark last year’s 85th anniversary of the much-loved New York museum, which houses the Old Masters collection amassed by the 19th-century industrialist Henry Clay Frick.
The publication takes its title from one of the texts written by the US novelist Jonathan Lethem, who describes the sumptuous sleeve of Sir Thomas More, depicted in Hans Holbein the Younger’s 1527 portrait, as “ecstasy, the sleeve should be illegal, the sleeve was Utopia”. ....

Las Vegas first began their phased reopening in June with each month reintroducing hotels and dining venues again opening their doors to visitors.
Since we last reported on what to expect during a Las Vegas getaway during pandemic restrictions, many attractions and exhibits have reopened alongside the debut of brand-new venues.
While the coronavirus vaccine should enable safer travels, it is still important to follow current health and safety protocols in Las Vegas. Face masks and social distancing are the norm, so be sure to pack personal safety essentials. Hotels and resorts continue to limit occupancy, and dining venues are still operating with limited seating. ....
