Info secretary, senior journalists discuss Journalists Protection Bill draft | Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF)


KARACHI   –  Sindh Information Secretary Rafiq Ahmed Buriro said on Tuesday that every step was being taken to improve laws related to welfare of media, particularly journalists, with a view to provide conducive atmosphere for their sustained growth.  
This he said while holding a meeting of senior journalists to discuss draft of Journalists Protection Bill (JPB) at his office. Karachi Press Club (KPC) President Fazil Jameeli, senior journalists Mazhar Abbas, Dr Jabbar Khattak, GM Jamali, Owais Aslam Ali, Qazi Asif, Director Information Muhammad Saleem Khan and Section Officer Majid Hameed Shaikh were present on the occasion.      
The information secretary said that journalists play a pivotal role not only in highlighting grievances of masses but also keeping an eye on the steps of the government. Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) calls for a judicial inquiry into the armed attack on Absar Alam former chairman of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and former editor of Daily Nation, Islamabad.


Alam, who is the former chairman of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and former editor of 
Daily Nation, Islamabad was shot in Islamabad on April 20, as he was taking an evening stroll near his house.  An unidentified man jumped over the fence of the park, fired at Alam and escaped.  Police have registered a criminal case against unidentified men for firing on Alam.
Alam was rushed to the hospital by his friends.  Although injured, Alam recorded a video on the way to the hospital in which he said he had been struck on his ribs.  In a note of defiance Alam declared: “My message to those who did this is that I am not going to be scared by such tactics.” ....

For print-media, the growth of the internet has been akin to a slow-driving nail in the coffin of an industry, which once sat at the helm of many revolutions.
Today, as print publications slowly disappear from the public eye, it’s more common to stumble upon newspapers soaking oil from meals served at fast-food outlets than to see them being read.
