SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With nice weather, a relaxing of some travel restrictions, and some snow on the ground, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend is expected to be a busy one in the Sierra. The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) and California State Parks have joined together in an outreach campaign to provide simple actions to increase the enjoyment of the outdoors experience. Staying local, planning ahead, social distancing guidelines, not leaving trash and following the posted rules are just some of the ways to enjoy Lake Tahoe and the Sierra. Recreating responsibly will help ensure that expanded access to recreational facilities, services, and opportunities continues. Day use areas of National Forests and state parks currently open to the public remain open for the health and welfare of Californians. ....

Club members started the season by providing snow pants and boots to children in the Tahoe Head Start program, knowing that every child deserves the opportunity to keep warm as they play in the snow. The club would like to thank Cheryl the K-Mart store manager for her support of the project. Again this year, club members selected angels from the Angel Tree at Live Violence Free. Kiwanis elves went to work shopping for gifts from the children’s ‘wish list’ in hopes of putting a smile on the faces of the children on Christmas morning. ....

Davis, Big Bend Sector Public Affairs, 202-839-1817, [email protected] An illegal immigrant with an active warrant was one of many arrests across Big Bend Sector in the last day. Almost 60 arrests were made across the sector and over 200 pounds of marijuana was seized as Big Bend Sector continues to disrupt human and narcotic smuggling attempts. Of particular significance was the arrest of Arturo Palma-Vera, a Mexican national, who was wanted in Springfield, Illinois, for a parole violation. A search for previous criminal history revealed the active warrant for Palma-Vera. He was subsequently turned over to the Hudspeth County Sheriff for further prosecution. ....
