It s been a violent month in Monroe County. With nearly two-thirds of Rochester s 2021 homicides taking place since March 11, city residents are reeling, including those who have already been through testing times. Lentory Johnson, whose son, Johnny Johnson, was one of the three killed in a drive-by shooting outside of the Boys & Girls Club in 2015, said she is disturbed by the uptick in violence. April 5, 2021 Just a quick heads up about the extra RPD patrols in the City of Rochester starting this weekend. If you didn’t already know the Rochester Police Department will be on foot and on bikes in certain city neighborhoods. The areas the RPD will target are the neighborhoods that have higher incidents of crime. They will also target people that have a history of gun-related violence. RPD Chief Cynthia Herriott-Sullivan said the locations are based upon real-time analytics. This is because of the recent violence that has claimed the lives of 3 people in a 24-hour time frame. The goal is to curb the violence in city neighborhoods. ....

(WHEC)- A federal class-action civil rights lawsuit was filed by several groups Monday, and it s suing the Rochester Police Department, several top local leaders, as well as a number of named and unnamed police officers. The 96-page filing was issued by a number of law firms, as well activists and protestors from organizations like Free the People Roc. The lawsuit spans decades of allegations of excessive force by the department, with a timeline starting with police responses to the Daniel Prude protests starting in September 2020. There is a pattern and practice in the RPD of using excessive force to suppress demonstrations against the RPD’s racist policing practices, the lawsuit claims. ....
