SAINT CHARLES, Mo. From Weldon Spring to O Fallon and St. Charles, firefighters in St. Charles County worked overtime on the Fourth of July.
This year was definitely an anomaly, said Captain Kelly Hunsel of the St. Charles City Fire Department. To have four structural fires in all of St. Charles County at the same time is really unprecedented.
The holiday weekend brought on more than just home fires. There were also brush fires and dumpster fires. Hunsel said she would guess there were up to a dozen fire-related calls in the span of about three or four hours. ....

Emergency crews are responding to a multi-vehicle wreck north about seven miles north of Charles City Monday afternoon.
No official word has been issued by law enforcement, but unconfirmed reports indicate there may have been a head-on collision between two vehicles about a half mile west of the intersection of Quail Avenue and Floyd County Road B-33, near the Floyd Volunteer Fire Department.
Among the known agencies responding to the scene include the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Floyd County Emergency Management, and Charles City Fire and Rescue.

Lightning strike blamed for fire at home of Charles City firefighter
A Charles City firefighter s house was struck by lightning early Tuesday.

CHARLES CITY, Iowa - A Charles City firefighter s house was struck by lightning early Tuesday.
The Charles City Fire Department said it happened at 2198 Old Highway Rd. southeast of Charles City. 
Occupants of the home were home at the time of the lightning strike and subsequent fire. They both were able to escape without injury, and no injuries to firefighters were reported on scene, the department said. 
The home is owned by Russell Bornstein, who is a 20-year veteran firefighter of the Charles City Fire Department. ....

Osage man killed in Hwy 218 collision – KCHA News

Osage, IA – An Osage man was killed in a Friday afternoon crash in southern Mitchell County.
The collision occurred at the intersection of Highway 218 and 320
th Street at 1:32pm.
The Iowa State Patrol says 66-year-old Steven Kapping of Osage was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado westbound on 320
th Street when he failed to stop at the stop sign at Highway 218 and was hit by a 1988 Kenworth semi driven by 45-year-old Darin M. Tusler, also of Osage, who was heading southbound.
Kapping was transported to Mitchell County Regional Health in Osage where he was pronounced dead. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Tusler was not injured. ....
