Homicides overwhelm Portland Police Bureau in 2021, with more deaths so far than most years total.
These homicide detectives are buried under their cases. They just keep coming, Portland police Lt. Greg Pashley said on the heels of a grizzly night in the city that left three people dead.
Pashley spoke Wednesday. March 31, to address two separate shootings and a stabbing just hours earlier.
The first incident a shooting was reported near the 600 block of Northeast 131st Place shortly after 10 p.m. March 30. One person was injured and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Officers found the suspect a short time later inside a pickup truck, but he fled and a chase ensued. The chase ended in a dead-end parking lot and, after hours of negotiations, the man took his own life. ....

IRMO, S.C. (WIS) - A deputy is fighting for his life in the hospital after a crash in Richland County on Thursday morning, officials said.
It was a single-car crash near Koon Road in Irmo.
Crews rushed Sgt. Michael Mazerolle to the hospital, where he is in serious condition.
Officials have not said what caused the crash.
Sgt. Mazerolle has served with RCSD for 20 years.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.

Good news for corporals.
The Marine Corps is about to increase the number of opportunities to be promoted meritoriously to sergeant, according to an administrative message released on Monday.
“Commands are authorized to meritoriously promote not more than one half of one percent of the corporals on the 2nd day of the fiscal quarter (October, January, April, and July),” the MARADMIN said. ....

Additional rallies are announced for the weekend, including one Friday in the Pearl District.
Protests erupted outside the Mark Hatfield Federal Courthouse in downtown Portland as fires were set and federal service officers used chemical munitions to move the crowd back Thursday, March 11.
A group of about 50 to 60 people dressed in black were seen ripping down plywood, spray painting graffiti and setting fires. After a while, Federal Protective Officers pushed them back with tear gas and less-lethal munitions.
Over the course of about two hours, multiple skirmishes were seen as protesters set fires, officers extinguished them, then pushed the protesters back again. Tear gas was used outside the federal courthouse and protesters were arrested or detained. ....
