A controversial Colorado Senate bill that would have codified emissions-reduction goals will not move forward this legislative session, and Pueblo leadership is happy to hear it. Lead Democratic sponsors of SB21-200, Sen. Faith Winter, D-Westminster, and Rep. Dominique Jackson, D-Aurora, have said they will no longer push for the bill’s passage following an impasse with Gov. Jared Polis, who has threatened a veto, and opposition from local elected officials. Instead, they will try to incorporate some of the bill’s provisions, including the enforcement of emissions reductions across electric, oil, gas and industrial sectors, into another House bill. ....
Pueblo County will equip low-income essential workers with an electric bicycle as part of a new program aimed at providing reliable transportation options and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Colorado Energy Office awarded $165,000 to the county through its Can Do eBike Pilot Program, enough to purchase 42 e-bikes which vary in price from $2,100 for a Class 1 model to $1,600 for a Class 2 bike. That grant money doesn’t require any matching funds from the county. The idea is for the bicycles to act as reliable, consistent transportation for working people who may not be able to afford a car or who cannot rely on the city’s public transportation. ....
A week after the Great Flood of 1921, a life-sized papier-mache horse was discovered in a tree in Avondale, 15 miles east of Pueblo. Miraculously, only the horse’s ears were damaged despite its delicate construction. It was the dappled gray display horse with real horsehair and painted eyes from R.T. Frazier’s saddle shop on Second Street in Downtown Pueblo. He was a display horse for saddles, harnesses, regalia everything, said Mohammad Curtis, the outreach coordinator at the Pueblo Heritage Museum, where the horse is currently on display. Even though the Fraziers put the horse inside when the rain started on June 3, it was still washed away with the fierce floodwaters. A hollow barrel makes up the horse’s core, perhaps adding to its buoyancy. ....
