It s Tuesday, May 4, 2021, and may the fourth be with you on Primary Election Day. There are not a lot of races but if you want to check out what s on the ballot and where to vote, check out our election guide.
While in one sense it is a low-key election day, the stakes are high tonight in the three-way Democratic Party battle between incumbent Mayor Jamael Tito Brown and challengers Julius Oliver and Ryan Kelly. It s hard to unseat an incumbent, but ANYTHING can happen in a three-way race with low voter turnout.
To that end, the

Historic preservation nominees sought | News, Sports, Jobs


YOUNGSTOWN The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is resuming its annual Historic Preservation Awards program for outstanding revitalization projects and people who have made an impact on preservation in the community.
MVHS has recognized more than 60 organizations and individuals since 2005, but put the awards program on hold last year because of the pandemic.
The MVHS Historic Preservation Awards are sponsored by First Place Community Fund, a component of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley.
Call-for-entry details are being sent to members and various businesses, organizations, and individuals across the Valley. After a judging process is completed in May, which is National Preservation Month, a special ceremony to acknowledge winners will be held during MVHS’ 146th annual meeting on June 22. ....

Robinson-Shuba statue dedication delayed | News, Sports, Jobs

YOUNGSTOWN A committee has postponed dedication of the Robinson-Shuba Commemorative Statue, originally set for April, because of the continued proliferation of COVID-19.
The Robinson-Shuba Statue Committee expects to decide by mid-May on a new date in late summer.
“We look forward to dedicating the statue in Wean Park when the COVID-19 situation improves,” Ernie Brown, co-chair of the statue committee, said. “So we’re postponing our April 18 event in the best interest of the health and safety of the many we expect will attend. We look forward to setting a new date by mid-May.”
The April 18, 1946, handshake of Jackie Robinson, the first African American allowed to play in mainstream professional baseball, and George Shuba, his white teammate from Youngstown, was a landmark moment in the integration of baseball and, eventually, much of American life. ....

BOARDMAN Robert D. Calhoun, 90, passed away peacefully late Friday evening, Dec. 25, 2020, at Shepherd of the Valley in Boardman.
Robert, known as “Bob,” was born Sept. 30, 1930, in Flint, Mich., the son of the late Ernest and Helen Gault Calhoun.
Bob was a 1948 graduate of Bendle High School in Burton, Mich. In 1951, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953 and returned to his hometown after his service. He began working for General Motors Fisher Body No. 2 in Flint, Mich., as a worker’s compensation administrator. Bob and his family relocated to Youngstown after accepting a transfer to the Lordstown Plant, from where he retired with more than 30 years of service with General Motors. ....
