Erode: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a first information report (FIR) against a father-son duo in connection with the death of a wild tusker, which was electrocuted after it came in contact with a live illegal electrical fence around their farmland at Jeerahalli a few months ago.
According to Santhosh Kumar, deputy superintendent of police, CBI-SCB, Chennai, N Kalaiya and his son Madhappa Kalaiya had not obtained any permission to erect the electrical fence to protect their standing crop from the wild elephant raid.
“The tusker was electrocuted when it attempted to enter the farmland in the Jeerahalli forest range, Hasanur forest division, in Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR), on December 19, 2020. The two then attempted to steal the tusks, but forest officials stopped them from doing so,” the officer said. ....

A 15-year-old elephant that had problematic interactions with humans in Dharmapuri was captured and translocated to the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) where it was released on Thursday morning.
The tusker was captured due to intense pressure by people, who had wanted the elephant to be captured as it had allegedly been responsible for the death of two persons in Dharmapuri, and was also known to enter human habitations and destroy crops. ....

The Central Bureau of Investigation has launched an investigation into alleged poaching and killing of elephants in the forests of Tamil Nadu. This is an old issue raised by wildlife activists over the years.
In February, this year, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court had asked the CBI to probe the larger connections of middlemen, poachers and the kingpins in these killings on the basis of a report submitted by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), read a Hindustan Times report.
On January 5, 2021, CBI had lodged three First Information Reports (FIRs) registered by local police – into the death of an Indian elephant (Elephas Maximus) at Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve in Hasanur (Tamil Nadu) in December 19, 2020; death of another male elephant in April 2014 in Udumalpet Forest Range (Anamalai Tiger Reserve) and the killing of another elephant ....
