TISL invites MPs to signal a culture of accountability by disclosing assets


Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) has written to all MPs to publicly disclose their asset declarations for 2020/2021.
Issuing a press release, the TISL said it calls on the MPs to follow the example set by 12 Parliamentarians of the previous Parliament, from various parties, who came forward to unilaterally publish their asset declarations in the public domain, marking a significant shift towards a culture of electoral accountability. TISL said it also encourages all elected officials at the Provincial Council and Local Government level to join the cause by publicly disclosing their asset declarations.

Parliament to convene for two days next week


Ten-hour debate on Port City Economic Commission Bill
The Committee on Parliamentary Business, chaired by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, yesterday, decided to limit next week’s Parliament sittings to two days (4th and 5th May).
The debate on the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill will take place on the 5 May from 10.00 am to 8.00 pm without adjournment for lunch, said the Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake.
Dasanayake also said that an adjournment debate on the current COVID-19 situation in the country will be held on 4th May from 11.00 am to 5.30 pm.
The Secretary General said that there would be no time for oral questions on both sitting days. ....

COLOMBO (News 1st); Association of Medical Specialists issuing a press release said, priority should be given to preventing the spread of the virus, rather than treating the patients.
The release said “If the country needs to be in lockdown in any way to curb the spread of the disease immediately, that decision must be made in a timely manner.
The release added that the decision can only be made if health authorities provide accurate information to political leaders and decision-makers. ....
