Denver City Council Voting on Eviction Legal Defense Program


CdeBaca and Sawyer estimate that the program would cost around $4 million annually; it would be funded by federal pandemic relief money during the first three and a half years of operation. Denver has had an eviction legal defense fund pilot program in place since mid-2018, but because of a lack of funding, it s only been able to provide attorneys for a fraction of indigent individuals facing eviction.
City council will vote on the proposal during its June 7 meeting. If the proposal passes, it will take effect in September. Some renters want it now.
Under an executive order recently extended by Governor Jared Polis through the end of June, landlords must give 30 days notice, rather than the standard ten-day notice, before an eviction can be filed for nonpayment of rent. The executive order also mandates that landlords provide a list of resources to renters when initiating an eviction. Senate approves Colorado Option on 19-16 vote with one Democrat opposed


On Wednesday, the state Senate passed House Bill 1232 to allow the commissioner of insurance to create a standardized healthcare plan for the individual and small group market that insurance companies would be mandated to offer and doctors and hospitals mandated to accept.
The vote was 19-16, with Sen. Rachel Zenzinger, D-Arvada, the only Democrat in the Senate (and the General Assembly) to vote against it. 
The bill must go back to the House for concurrence on nine amendments put on the bill by the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and by Democrats on the Senate floor. 
Wednesday s vote ended months of negotiations with the healthcare industry, all of whom were opposed to the bill at different times. As of Wednesday, hospitals and doctors are neutral, but the insurance industry remained opposed.  ....
