| Updated: 10:43, 01 March 2021 A new footbridge has been lowered into Canterbury East train station as part of a £4.8 million upgrade. Crossing both platforms, the structure will house lifts either side - making access at the station step-free for the very first time. The bridge being lowered into position. Pictures: Network Rail Work has been carried over the past few weekends, and now the bridge is lowered into place along with a set of staircases. The scheme hopes to make the station more accessible to passengers with mobility issues, as well as elderly people and parents with young children. The project is planned to be fully complete by this July. ....

Safety concerns over University of Kent s Eliot footpath in Canterbury after women grabbed Published: 06:00, 20 December 2020 A university is considering improving lighting along a campus footpath - after two young women were grabbed by a man in separate incidents. Students say they no longer feel safe walking along Eliot footpath, which cuts through an area of open countryside at the University of Kent in Canterbury (UKC). While the walkway itself is lit up, the vast surrounding area is plunged into darkness at night, which currently falls at about 4pm. On November 28, a young woman was grabbed by a man as she walked along the path at about 11.15pm. ....
Canterbury East station evacuated after man barricades himself in office | Updated: 06:48, 15 December 2020 A man barricaded himself inside a railway station office and warned police he was armed with weapons. Canterbury East railway station was evacuated during the incident last night before police forced entry into the room where the man was holed up. Canterbury East railway station A spokesman for British Transport Police said: Officers were called at 21:50 for reports of a male who had barricaded himself in an office at the station. Upon arrival of officers they found a very distressed male who refused to come out, stating he had weapons with him. ....
