After its previous owner spent a full year searching for a buyer, the struggling shopping mall at the heart of Gwinnett Place will soon belong to Gwinnett County itself. With the $23M purchase of the Gwinnett Place Mall set to close at the end of March, officials and residents are facing a new question: What’s next? The first step will likely be crafting a master plan for the Gwinnett Place Mall site. The road map will build upon the Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District’s vision and concept studies conducted in recent years, paring back vacant retail space and repurposing vast parking lots into housing, offices, green space and transit amenities. But exactly what will go into that master plan is still to be determined. ....

As chair of the five-person Board of Education, Blair now leads a panel that oversees the largest school system in Georgia’s second-most populous county. He is one of about two-dozen LGBTQ school board members in the U.S. and apparently is the only gay school board president in the country, according to the Victory Institute. ....

When I graduated from law school in 1990, I made Gwinnett County my home. And, here I have lived nearly my entire adult life. I came and never left because of wonderful people, economic opportunity, great schools and visionary leaders. And, in my 30 years here, I have encountered few people as dedicated, competent, and forward thinking as retiring Gwinnett County Commission Chair Charlotte Nash. I wonât attempt to list all the positions she has held and all the accomplishments she has achieved for this county, as they are many. Let me just say that I am grateful that she has come our way. ....
