A NEW book about The Fall reveals the huge influence Prestwich had on the songwriting of frontman Mark E Smith. Excavate! The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall compiles never-before-published essays and rare ephemera of the legendary post-punk band supplied by fans and collectors. In the book, Elaine Harwood, an architectural historian with Historic England, writes about how the brutalist architecture of Mark’s hometown impacted on his lyrics and outlook. Mark, who died in 2018 at the age of 60, grew up in Sedgley Park and an indication of his love for the area and its local mythology is indicated by the number of Prestwich buildings featured on The Fall’s early record covers. “Writing about Prestwich is just as valid as Dante writing about his inferno,” he wrote in his autobiography ....
In the Dock THE following cases were heard at Peterlee and Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Courts in the last week. JANE ELIZABETH SEAGRAVE, from West Auckland, was ordered to pay £500 after her black and white collie dog attacked a man whilst being dangerously out of control. The incident took place on June 15, of last year. Seagrave, 44, of Copeland Road, indicated a plea of guilt and was made to pay £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service. CHRISTOPHER LAIDLAW, 39, of Wylam Street, Bowburn, was handed a community order requiring him to undergo rehabilitation after he was caught growing 17 cannabis plants on March 12, of this year. He indicated a plea of guilt and was ordered to pay a £95 victim surcharge and £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service. ....
William Perks A BANNED driver who was caught hiding up a tree after a high-speed police chase has been jailed. Officers attempted to pull William Perks over in Runcorn after he was spotted travelling ‘recklessly at high speeds’ through the town on Sunday, March 28. The motorist drove into oncoming traffic along Clifton Road before the pursuit continued into Frodsham. His Mazda was clocked at speeds of up to 90mph and the 31-year-old continued even after patrols successfully deployed a stinger on his vehicle. While overtaking another driver at speed, Perks – from Tarporley – crashed into a wall and fled on foot, but was located a short time afterwards in a tree and arrested. ....
