United Way of Effingham County 39% Toward Goal

The 2020 Effingham County United Way Campaign is currently underway.
To date, a total of $126,419 has been raised, which is 39% of the $320,000 goal. The Effingham County United Way Board of Directors is asking for your help during these unprecedented times.
Funds raised help 20 local partner agencies provide support and services to those in need in Effingham County. The global pandemic has greatly affected fundraising efforts as fundraisers previously scheduled were cancelled due to COVID.
Prior to the pandemic, one out of three people used services provided by the agencies. Because of the pandemic, these agencies are serving more people in our community during these difficult times. ....

Dieterich Village Board Refinances Bonds to Save on Interest Costs

Dieterich village board members Monday approved the refinancing of bonds to save on interest costs.
One change involves the Tax Increment Financing District #3 and financing infrastructure improvements. The others involve a change in terms agreement to finance sewer infrastructure improvements, financing for Phase 3 of improvements to the east addition of North Pointe Estates, and infrastructure work on the fifth addition to Hartke Subdivision.
Village board members also awarded work to clean out the Norb Avenue detention pond in the west industrial park for just under $23,000, awarded work on the Zumbahlen Avenue sewer extension for Higgs Welding for just under $15,000, and awarded drainage improvements on Park Street and Virginia Street for just over $5,300. ....

Jordan Bear Named Next Neoga Elementary Principal

Neoga Community Unit School District #3 has announced that Jordan Bear has been selected as the Neoga Elementary School Principal for the 2021-2022 academic school year. Bear will succeed Denise Helmers, who is departing at the end of this school year.
Bear is currently the K-8 Technology teacher for Neoga Elementary and Neoga Junior High School. Prior to that, he taught junior high school science in Neoga. His teaching career started as an elementary teacher at Paris Crestwood from 2009-2015.
Neoga school officials said Bear s elementary school teaching experience, his strong background on the benefits of Professional Learning Communities, and his knowledge of Educational Technology will aid him in leading Neoga Elementary School. ....

There are some grinches out there.
Wonderland in Lights has been a smash again this year, drawing big carloads of visitors to Community Park in Effingham every night. On one recent night, cars were backed up out of Engbring Street and onto Temple Avenue, west to Willow Street.
It s a hit, and that s why it s disappointing to hear that someone is trying to mess things up.
Effingham Director of Tourism Jodi Thoele said there has been trouble recently with individuals unplugging the lights and, in Thoele s words, dimming the experience for others. ....
