LONDON, May 25, 2021 /PRNewswire/ Kao Data, the specialist developer and operator of advanced, carrier neutral data centres for high performance colocation, has today announced it has become NVIDIA DGX-Ready Data Center certified. This step further reinforces its capabilities as a world-class data centre operator and highlights its expertise in delivering customised architectures for high-performance computing (HPC), AI and supercomputing environments.
Nvidia has published a new blog post about the soon-to-be operating Cambridge-1 AI supercomputer. Yes, it is being installed at a facility in the UK, at the Kao Data data centre, but it isn t in Cambridge, it is 40 miles south in Harlow. Nevertheless, this location was chosen for its proximity to the cluster of life science tech companies in the vicinity of Cambridge.

As touched upon above, the Cambridge-1 AI supercomputer will be largely tasked with simulations and problems that healthcare researchers are interested in solving. In the coming months it is expected to be running through programs designed by scientists from the likes of AstraZeneca, GSK, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, King’s College London, and Oxford Nanopore. These companies and institutions have already announced their intent to use the Cambridge-1, but I m sure others will follow.
Traditionally, supercomputers are slow installations, taking years to plan and build, but the Cambridge-1 is already in operation at the Kao data centre just 20 weeks after its inception.
The speed of the installation is all the more impressive as it has been built amid a global pandemic and three separate lookdowns in the UK. The Kao data centre, which featured in this months
IT Pro 20/20, has been operating for the best part of the last year with mission-critical staff only, working in rotating shifts and under strict operational guidelines. On top of that, quarantine periods for international travel has resulted in most of the deployment being overseen remotely from the US.
