Covid hospitalisations double in 2 weeks as they reach highest peak in 7 months

CONFIRMED Covid-19 patients in Irish hospitals have rocketed to 409 - their highest peak since May.
The number of patients being treated for the virus in hospital has also doubled in two weeks, rising from 198 on December 15, according to HSE s Covid-19 Data Hub.

The data hub - accurate to 8am this morning - also shows that there have been 36 admissions to hospital in the last 24 hours, along with 14 discharges.
According to the HSE s daily operations update, as of yesterday at 8pm, the acute hospital site with the most Covid-19 patients is Beaumont with 67. ....

MET EIREANN say some areas will be hit by sleet and snow tonight, as temperatures fall to around -3C.
Throughout the week ahead, the weather forecaster warns of sub-zero temperatures and widespread frost and ice by night .

Today, meanwhile, will be cold and blustery with bright spells and scattered showers, some with hail and a risk of wintry falls over high ground.
Showers mainly across the western half of the country this morning will spread eastwards during the afternoon.

British woman fined €1,500 over air rage incident on flight diverted to Cork

A British woman (33) has been fined â¬1,500 by a Cork court over an air rage incident on a flight from the Canary Islands to the UK.
The woman became so abusive towards cabin crew that the pilot was forced to divert to Cork because he feared for the safety of everyone on board.
Gemma Campbell from Elston Road in Manchester, England was arrested by gardaÃ after Jet2 Flight LS910 from Fuertaventura in the Canary Islands to Manchester was forced to divert to Cork Airport on December 27th.
On Monday, at a special sitting of Cork District Court, Garda Gearoid Whelton told how he arrested Campbell after the plane, with more than 100 passengers on board, landed at Cork Airport. He brought her to Togher Garda station where he charged her with two offences arising out of the incident. ....
