The state Department of Public Health said in its Friday daily report that there are 5,074 newly confirmed cases of coronavirus in Massachusetts, including 129 on the Cape and Islands. Also on Friday, the Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment announced it will launch a regionwide helpline phone number to answer COVID-related questions at 8 a.m., Tuesday. Ten Cape Cod Medical Reserve Corps volunteers have been trained to answer questions about COVID-19, such as how to get a COVID-19 test or how to help someone navigate the three-phased approach to vaccination, county officials said in a press release. Barnstable County Communications Manager Sonja Sheasley said county staff is being inundated with questions, especially from residents who are confused about when and how they can get a vaccine. ....
The homes on Springhill Beach are part of an ongoing story of beach erosion in the area. “There is no new normal,” said David DeConto, director of natural resources in Sandwich, adding there are either devastating years or years with continued erosion. Four structures on Salt Marsh Road were badly damaged in the December storm, he said. Other places that tend to get quite a bit of erosion include houses on Bay Beach Lane and White Path Lane along Town Neck Beach, he said. Mashpee Town Manager Rodney Collins said the town had experienced its largest increase that he knows of to date, while the U.S. Postal Service said it has had 80 employees in Massachusetts test positive for COVID-19 in the past 30 days. Steve Doherty, spokesman for the USPS Atlantic Area Northeast Region, said in an email following a weekend announcement by Chatham town officials that four staff people at the North Chatham Post Office had tested positive for COVID-19. The Postal Service also received an anonymous report that members of the South Yarmouth Post Office also had fallen ill. ....
Those tasked with identifying potential mascots for Barnstable Public Schools say the stain on the name “Red Raider,” which has been associated with logos of Native American people and imagery for decades, can’t be washed away by pairing it with a new mascot. Members of the 24-person Barnstable Public Schools Community Engagement Subcommittee met Tuesday to discuss the possibility of an upcoming Barnstable School Committee vote to keep the name “Red Raider” on the table while the subcommittee identifies potential replacement mascots for the district. Almost universally, subcommittee members said keeping the name “Red Raider” would be a half-measure that doesn’t address the harm and offense the mascot has caused for decades. ....
Cape Cod Times EAST FALMOUTH A horse was killed after it was struck by a vehicle Tuesday night near Thomas B. Landers Road. The Falmouth Police Department said in a statement that it received a report of a horse walking down Sandwich Road in the area of Thomas B. Landers Road at approximately 6:03 p.m. Shortly afterward, the department received a second call reporting that a horse had been struck by a vehicle in the area. Police found that the horse had died by the time they arrived at the scene, according to the statement. A second horse that was loose was safely returned to its owner. ....
