Amy Elik, R-Fosterburg, was officially sworn into office Wednesday as the new state representative for the 111th Legislative District. Elik was sworn in during a ceremony of the 102nd Illinois General Assembly held at BOS Center in Springfield. She thanked the residents of Madison and Jersey counties for electing her. “I ran for office to represent the forgotten voices of a border district,” she said. “I am tired of seeing families flee Illinois to neighboring states for more favorable policies and better opportunity for the middle class,” Elik said. “Our state is in crisis. I will work to advance the needs and priorities of the district and will take those forgotten voices with me to Springfield every day.” ....

Late start courses available this spring at LCCC The Telegraph FacebookTwitterEmail GODFREY Lewis and Clark Community College is offering a slate of 12-week, late start courses that will give students a second chance at a full schedule beginning in February. All six are transfer-ready general education courses being offered either online or through Virtual Class Meetings, in which students meet in a virtual environment, like Zoom or Blackboard Collaborate, during scheduled class times. Online courses are asynchronous, with no scheduled class meetings. “Late start provides an excellent opportunity for students who still haven’t registered for spring to take a full array of general education courses at Lewis and Clark,” Interim Chief Academic Officer Jill Lane said. ....
Mayors oppose criminal justice reform bill Ron DeBrock, [email protected] FacebookTwitterEmail Nine Riverbend mayors have issued a joint statement opposing House Bill 3653, a criminal justice reform bill. In the opinion of the mayors, if Gov. J.B. Pritzer signs the bill it will have a devasting effect on the ability of police departments to keep communities safe while enforcing the law equally and fairly for all. Madison County law enforcement officials on Wednesday urged lawmakers not to approve the bill. Just before noon Wednesday the Illinois House voted 60-50 to approve the bill. The passage came about seven hours after the Illinois Senate, at around 4 a.m. Wednesday, approved the bill 32-23. ....
