Editorial — Taking responsibility: Legalizing recreational marijuana will require us to step up

You voted: No, we need the money Vote Back Legalizing recreational marijuana in New York will require numerous changes on the part of many people. This will bring certain benefits. Incarcerating individuals for using marijuana made little sense. It unnecessarily complicated our criminal justice system and jammed our prisons. Over the decades, this has had dreadful consequences on minority communities. So the decision last month by the state Legislature to reverse this course was welcome news. More resources can be allocated to treating marijuana use as a public health issue rather than a criminal problem. And, let’s not forget, this opens a new avenue for tax money to find its way to Albany.

North country law enforcement officials respond to marijuana legalization

ALBANY — Recreational marijuana sales and use for adults 21 years of age and older is legal … WATERTOWN — They might not be opposed to medical marijuana, but many law enforcement officials in the north country are against the full legalization that occurred Wednesday, saying it’s an excuse for revenue, difficult to enforce and further advancing for illegal dealers. Jefferson County Sheriff Colleen M. O’Neill said the day had been coming for years: when the state government would legalize recreational marijuana for adults. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed the legislation into law Wednesday morning. The state Legislature debated into the late evening hours Tuesday, but the measure, the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act, ultimately passed in both legislative chambers on Tuesday.
