Not known for being a particularly international city, Tainan has nonetheless been influenced by foreigners for hundreds of years. Contemporary visitors can still see and experience a number of their lasting contributions.
It’s been almost 400 years since Dutch traders disembarked in present-day Tainan, kicking off a long history of foreign interaction and influence. In the centuries that followed, European and Japanese figures left their mark on the city with the construction of forts, buildings, and roads, as well as irrigation systems that made land more fertile. Foreign religious figures introduced romanized writing systems for indigenous and Taiwanese languages and Taiwan’s first newspaper. These aspects of the city’s past can still be glimpsed on a trip to Tainan today. ....

Taipei, May 10 (CNA) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world s largest contract chipmaker, said on Monday that its sales for April fell more than 13 percent from a month earlier, with analysts attributing the fall to the slow-season effect in the second quarter for the global smartphone market.
In a statement, TSMC said it posted NT$111.32 billion (US$4.00 billion) in consolidated sales, down 13.8 percent from March, but up 16 percent from a year earlier. The April figure was the second-lowest of the year after February s NT$106.53 billion. ....

Taiwan s president, premier and new transportation minister have all advocated reforming the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) following its worst train accident in 73 years on April 2 that left 49 people dead and over 200 injured.
Such appeals are nothing new they were also uttered after a crash in October 2018 in which 18 people died but were not acted on. ....
