Not Enough Women: Feminists Oppose Statues Honouring War Heroes

19 Feb 2021
Feminists have denounced proposals to honour war heroes who won the Victoria Cross and George Cross with hometown statues because not enough of them are women.
Awarded, often posthumously, for the “most conspicuous bravery, or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice, or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy”, each Victoria Cross is struck from bronze taken from captured enemy guns, and it is regarded as the highest military honour in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth. The Smart Wife: Is your home voice assistant sexist? | Science| In-depth reporting on science and technology | DW

It s very calculated and algorithmically managed. But it s also about how that kind of wife work is valued in the home, and the way in which we have previously valued or undervalued the people that are doing that work.
In the book, we mention voice assistants used in other contexts. But we re looking specifically at voice assistants in the home. And there s still this very rigid and limited ideal of what the home is, and the roles people play. We still operate on the basis of 2.4 people and assume heteronormative relations between the adult couple. It s that context that makes all these devices really problematic, because they are reenergizing that outdated ideal. ....

'My Best Girlfriend': Queer Dietrich, on screen and off

‘My Best Girlfriend’: Queer Dietrich, on screen and off
Modelling top hats and tuxedos, Marlene Dietrich brought an aura of cabaret decadence to her films of the 1930s, yet it was her off-screen habit of wearing trousers to Hollywood premieres that inflamed the media.

Morocco (1930)
In the introduction to her groundbreaking study of pioneer female filmmaker Dorothy Arzner, Judith Mayne includes a snapshot that is very definitely not of the director, but that was in her archive at UCLA. The candid snap shows Marlene Dietrich holding a large, extremely grumpy cat that she is regarding adoringly, in the courtyard of Arzner and Marion Morgan’s home in Hollywood. ....
