Oneida County Towns Go on Record Opposing Sulfide Mining

An anti-mining group is trying to get Oneida County towns to oppose sulfide mining in the county and oppose looser laws on the practice statewide.
So far, five Oneida County towns have signed on.
The towns of Lynne, Cassian, Nokomis, Newbold, and Lake Tomahawk have all approved resolutions on the subject.
The measure is being considered by several other towns, too, said mining opponent Karl Fate.
“What we’re looking for ultimately here is to have the county take a position against sulfide mining and then to ask for the repeal of Act 134,” Fate said.
Act 134 is a 2017 Wisconsin law that eased the process for potential mining companies in the state. ....

No Eagle River Ice Castle in 2021 Due to Lack of Ice Thickness

The Eagle River Fire Department won’t be able to create its well-known Ice Castle this year.
The department usually pulls ice from Silver Lake. The ice needs to be at least 12 inches thick for the volunteers to create block big enough for the castle and for it to be safe enough for them to cut and pull the blocks out the ice.
In a Facebook post, the Eagle River Fire Department said the ice is 11 inches thick and the forecast doesn t show cold enough days ahead to gain that extra inch.
The last time conditions allowed for the creation of the Ice Castle was in 2018. That s the photos you re seeing. Due to uncooperative weather, the castle has been built just twice since 2014. ....

On a sunny day last week in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Kevin Sundholm picked up a small handful of marble-sized pellets of iron ore from the ground.

“Those pellets would go through there and they would get baked,” he said, gesturing at the abandoned foundations of the former Groveland Mine complex near Felch, in Dickinson County.
“You can see the remnants up on top of the silos there,” Sundholm said.
