Fox News correspondent Bryan Llenas has the latest on the New York governor profiting off the pandemic The Democratic-led state Senate plans to throw the book at New York’s embattled watchdog Joint Commission on Public Ethics Tuesday, preparing to pass legislation overhauling the panel. Although JCOPE has long been criticized for its lack of transparency and close ties to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the last straw came several weeks ago following revelations that the entire commission never discussed or voted to approve the governor’s outside income related to his controversial, $5.1 million book deal. Instead, it was secretly greenlit by staff enraging commissioners who later launched an investigation into the dealings. ....
The Indian Point nuclear plant was shut down on April 30. (File photo by B. Cronin) It was supposed to usher in a golden age for nuclear power in New York, and initially had little opposition. But eventually a network of environmental groups as well as everyday citizens who were wary of nuclear power in the wake of Three Mile Island, and then Chernobyl, turned against it. The public questioned the wisdom of building a nuclear power plant so close to New York City. Activists led protests, serenaded by folk singer Pete Seeger, a resident of Beacon. The evacuation plan the plant created was deemed to be unrealistic, and state officials refused to certify it. Finally, after many tumultuous years, Gov. Cuomo announced the decommissioning of the plant. ....
Good-government advocates push contract database PUBLISHED 5:22 AM ET May. 03, 2021 PUBLISHED 5:22 AM EDT May. 03, 2021 SHARE For the last six years, good-government organizations in New York have called for the creation of a database of deals an online clearinghouse of economic development agreements put in place by state officials and the private sector. This month, a half dozen watchdog groups once again reignited the push to create the database through the Empire State Development Corp, the main government entity charged with generating job creation. As fellow New Yorkers, we are deeply sympathetic to the disruption and distress caused by COVID-19. That said, ESD has had plenty of time to get this done, the groups wrote in a letter. We have been calling for fundamental improvements in transparency and accountability for State subsidies – including a Database of Deals – since 2015. ....
Seiler: We re rubber, Cuomo s glue FacebookTwitterEmail Casey Seiler, the Times Union s editor in chief. (Will Waldron /Times Union)Will Waldron Gov. Andrew Cuomo is in the bunker, though he is flying that bolthole across the state on the taxpayer s dime. On Wednesday, he was at an orchard in the Hudson Valley; on Thursday, at Belmont Racetrack on Long Island; on Friday, in Buffalo, joined by what sounded like two dozen attendees to announce internet aid to poor families. These were like Cuomo barnstorms since time immemorial, with one exception: The media was locked out. His press office cites COVID-19 protocols for barring reporters, but that s a joke: Elected officials ranging from U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer to Cuomo s own lieutenant governor, Kathy Hochul, have somehow managed to meet the press while staying safe. The real reason Cuomo is hiding out is because he s scared of the questions that would confront him in a live news conference. ....
