AFLOAT exclusively reveals the ship s name of the Marine Institute s new research vessel is to be the RV Tom Crean, in honour of the Irishman s considerable seafaring and polar expedition achievements in Antractica of more than a century ago.

A Norwegian naval architect consultancy that has designed the Marine Institute s new research vessel, Afloat.ie reveals is to be named RV Tom Crean after the Irish seaman and polar explorer in Antarctica,

The name chosen for the 52.80m marine research vessel by the M.I. will honour and recognise the famous Co. Kerry born native from Annascaul who was a member of three major expeditions to Antarctica that took place more than century ago. Mysterious history of Skellig Michael in County Kerry.


The first known reference to the islands occurs in legend. Skellig Michael is named as the burial place of Ir, son of Milesius, who drowned during the landing of the Milesians.
In a text from the 8th or 9th century, Duagh, King of West Munster, is said to have ‘fled to Scellecc’ after an episode of conflict between the Kings of Munster and the Kings of Cashel.

'Relatively busy year' for Irish Coast Guard


In an end of year commentary, the Coast Guard has highlighted, that despite the impact of Covid-19, 2020 has proven to be a relatively busy year.
Overall, the Coast Guard coordinated 2643 incidents in comparison with 2490 incidents in 2019.  Activity over February, March and April was the lowest recorded for each of those months over recent years but noticeably picked up in May with August and September proving to be exceptionally busy.
464 incidents were recorded in August in comparison with 369 for August of 2019 and 307 incidents recorded in September with a corresponding figure of 239 in in 2019.
Coast Guard Director Eugene Clonan said that the key challenge this year was to ensure the 24/7 delivery of Coast Guard SAR services, as coordinated by the three Rescue Coordination Centres in Malin, Valentia and MRCC Dublin and responses delivered primarily by Coast Guard’s own volunteer sector, its contracted Helicopter service, RNLI and Community Inshore Rescue serv ....

Six Dun Laoghaire mariners never came home for Christmas 80 years ago, when their lightship was attacked and sunk by a German bomber aircraft off the Wexford coast.
Now, the grand-daughter of one of those lost has appealed to other relatives of the
Isolda fatalities to make contact for research she is undertaking into their lives.
“They may not have been famous, but I’m sure that each of them was remarkable and their loss left a deep grief in their families,” says Elleesa Rushby, whose grandfather William Rushby died in the bombing at the age of 43. ....
