By Press Association 2021 New Scotland Yard An Asian former senior Metropolitan Police officer has claimed that institutional racism still exists in the force, and is “worse now” than after the Macpherson Inquiry more than 20 years ago. Former Chief Superintendent Parm Sandhu, who retired from the Met Police in 2019, alleged the label of institutional racism “fits” the force, which has “gone backwards” under the leadership of Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick. In an interview with Channel 4 News, Ms Sandhu said that she told Dame Cressida in 2019, when they talked about “positive action” schemes, that the Met “is not a safe environment for black and Asian officers”. ....

Former Tory chairwoman Baroness Warsi has repeated her claim that the party is “institutionally racist” and warned it would take years to undo the damage done by allegations of Islamophobia. An independent report concluded anti-Muslim sentiment remained a problem in the party but the allegation of institutional racism was not borne out by the evidence of the complaints system. Lady Warsi said the report did not go far enough and called for the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to investigate. Current Tory chairwoman Amanda Milling apologised on behalf of the party “to anyone who has been hurt by discriminatory behaviour of others or failed by our system” following the publication of Professor Swaran Singh’s report. ....
