Acting Inspector Mahony said police officers involved were used as “human punching bags” when they tried to break up the brawl. Police had been called to the family-friendly park at about 3.30pm on last year’s Australia Day, when small fights broke out among a large group of teenagers who had been drinking. The teenagers abused, attacked and threw rubbish including bottles at the officers as they tried to restrain them. It was a quiet day at Moffat Beach on Tuesday as police deterred partygoers from celebrating Australia Day at the beach.
