(SCHAUMBURG, ILLINOIS) July 30, 2021– World Veterinary Day is celebrated annually on the last Saturday of April to recognize the work of veterinarians around the world and their contributions to improving animal health and welfare, as well as public health. This year, the World Veterinary Association (WVA) and HealthforAnimals recognized the contributions of the veterinary profession to protect animal and human health during the COVID-19 pandemic.
On July 29, 2021, the WVA and HealthforAnimals presented the World Veterinary Day Award to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) to recognize their immediate response to meet the new challenges arising from the emergence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Test animals for COVID-19 — Veterinarian


 
A Senior Lecturer at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ghana, Dr Richard Suu-Ire, has underscored the need for animals in the country to be sampled and tested for COVID-19 in order to ascertain whether they have the disease or not.
Such a move, he explained, would help the country to know which particular animals had the virus to enable it put in place the necessary measures to prevent such animals from infecting human beings.
He said currently, Ghana and other countries in Africa were not doing any animal testing or surveillance for COVID-19, pointing out that it was not the best since “it was expected to look for the disease in animals, take their samples and test for them.” ....

Animal health advocates have penned an open letter calling on governments and international agencies to invest in animal health and welfare to prevent another pandemic.
Members of the Action for Animal Health coalition, in a letter marking Marking World Vet Day, assert that the importance of animal health systems to global health security is being overlooked.
One of the weakest health systems is the animal health system, they say.
“At least 75% of new human infectious diseases emerge from animals,” the 11 signatories wrote.
“Covid-19 joins a long list of other zoonotic diseases (infectious diseases transmitted from animals to humans) with potentially fatal consequences for humans, such as rabies, ebola, SARS and avian influenza. ....

GUWAHATI: The World Veterinary Day was celebrated following all the COVID-19 protocols at the Directorate campus of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department on Saturday. The programme was jointly organized by the All Assam Veterinary Services Association and Assam Veterinary Council.
The plantation programme was inaugurated by Ashok Kumar Barman, Secretary and Director of the department. A wall magazine was also set up at the Information Building.
The wall magazine was inaugurated by Rajeev Prakash Barua, retired Director, Information & Public Relations, Assam. Participating in the meeting held in the Directorate auditorium, retired Dean, College of Veterinary Science, Dr Rabindra Nath Goswami and Additional Chief Conservator of Forest M.K.
