(WBTV) - Fruit growers in Lincoln County have a couple of sleepless nights ahead as temperatures are expected to dip well below freezing in the pre-dawn hours. At Knob Creek Orchards, grower Jeff Crotts says the apples, peaches, and pears are all in bloom and are vulnerable. “They are at a critical point right now,” he said. ....

The bad news: They’ll have to do it with fewer grapes. The monster snowstorm and freeze of February had workers at Los Pinos Winery in Camp County on edge, waiting for the Spring bloom. Workers at Los Pinos had watched for nearly a month to see how much of their vineyard might have been lost to the February freeze. “It will be a light year for the grape harvest this year. You know if we lost plants it would take about three years after we replant to get a good crop,” said managing partner Perry Wilson. ....
The impacts to this yearâs apricot crop are a bit more up in the air, but a freeze Tuesday night appears to have generally spared local peach growers. Bruce Talbott of Talbott Farms in Palisade said that fruit trees are only now breaking out of their winter dormancy, helping protect them from the impacts of Tuesday nightâs freeze. âEverything except apricots is still very durable. We can probably take 10 degrees (as a low) and still have a peach crop and we werenât there. We werenât close to there,â he said. The official Grand Junction low temperature Wednesday morning was 20 degrees. Kris Sanders, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Grand Junction, said the agency received reports of low temperatures ranging from 16 degrees just north of Fruita to 29 in Palisade. After yesterday’s storms passed through our area, it left behind some chilly temperatures. This morning some of our listening areas woke up to temperatures in the high 30s and low 40s. The National Weather Service in Birmingham has upgraded the previous Freeze Watch to a “Freeze Warning for all of Central AL Thursday night and Friday morning. Temperatures will fall into the mid-20s north to low 30s south.” What you can expect is “sub-freezing temperatures as low as 28 expected. For the Wind Advisory, north winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected.” The Freeze Warning timeframe is from 1 am to 9 am on Friday, April 2, 2021. ....
