In a new study published in JAMA Pediatrics, researchers at Children s Hospital Colorado (Children s Colorado) have found that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of marijuana, stays in breast milk for up to six weeks, further supporting the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine to abstain from marijuana use during pregnancy and while a mother is breastfeeding. ....

Tuscaloosa: Students across the three-campus University of Alabama System will return to in-person instruction for the fall semester with no limits on class size in Birmingham, Huntsville or Tuscaloosa to guard against COVID-19, officials said Monday. The system, which has held classes in multiple formats since the pandemic began a year ago, said in a statement that current models show it should be safe to resume traditional teaching after the summer break. Millions more should have been vaccinated against the disease by then. Dr. Selwyn Vickers, the medical dean at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and chair of the system’s pandemic task force, said leaders will continue trying to make decisions based on data and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the state health agency. “If safety concerns arise, we can adjust our plan; the safety of the 110,000 students, faculty and staff of the UA ....

Breaking Benji: GJ's Andy Smith survives bout with brain tumor


Andy Smith sat comfortably in the passenger seat of his parents’ blue Toyota SUV, his head leaning back against the headrest with thoughts on how Jan. 12 would be spent simply relaxing at home after an unplanned trip to the Front Range.
Once the car pulled up to the house, however, he quickly noticed a crowd — neighbors, family, some of his old Grand Junction High School basketball teammates and even the GJHS Tigers’ mascot — waiting outside with balloons and signs.
It was a triumphant welcome home party for a young man who had spent 50 nights away because of a brain tumor which, in jest, he dubbed “Benji.” Those 50 nights were marked by challenges, concern and cameos by the all-time winningest coach in men’s college basketball, but more on that later. ....
