The past week has witnessed reports of increased Turkish military activity in Iraq and Syria as well as its intruding itself deeper into the war in Yemen. In all three cases Ankara has pitted itself against forces that are or can be seen to be pro-Iranian: Shiite parties in northern Iraq, the government of Syria and the Houthi-led government in Yemen.

With tough questions being asked on Capitol Hill and about 80 members of Congress calling for pressure on Saudi Arabia to lift its blockade of Yemen, it cannot be long before the Biden administration will be expected to deliver real results to end a six-year conflict that has caused what the United Nations says is the world s worst humanitarian crisis.
The supply of aid and the lifting of the blockade would save countless lives. Yet they are consequences of the conflict, not its cause. Addressing them alone will not bring an end to war. ....

A senior Yemeni official has warned that the Saudi-led coalition waging a devastating military campaign against the Arab country plans to hand over a strategic sea crossing in Yemen’s southern province of Abyan to members of the al-Qaeda terrorist group.
The deputy provincial governor of Abyan, Saleh al-Junaidi, warned on Thursday that foreign terrorists and extremist forces have been transferred on at least two occasions to the shores of Abyan – the last of which took place just two days ago, Yemen’s official Saba news agency reported. ....

Fewer traffic accidents, one fatality in first three months of 2021

There were fewer accidents in the first quarter of this year when compared to the same period last year, according to official data.
The National Statistics Office said there were 2,864 reported traffic accidents during the period, 14.7% less than the same period in 2020.
Most - 1,023, or 35.7% - were in the northern harbour district. Casualties decreased by 0.3% to 305.
Eighty one people - 52 drivers, 13 passengers and 16 pedestrians/cyclists/other - were grievously injured. The injuries suffered by a woman, who was hit by a car, proved fatal. There had been two fatalities in the same period in 2020.
The majority of those grievously injured were men (77.8). Most of the casualties (60%) involved persons in the 26 to 59 age bracket. ....
