Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters celebrates International Women’s Day through new campaign
March 8 marks International Women’s Day, and the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS) is celebrating through a campaign designed to highlight the essential work done by shelter staff from across the province. The campaign, known as The Shelter Superstars campaign, brings a focus to the largely female workforce who have been providing services to victims of domestic abuse throughout the pandemic.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, women’s shelters have remained open, having to adapt quickly to the changing health restrictions over the course of the past year. The Calgary Women’s Emergency Centre noted that the total number of clients served was over 15,000 in their last fiscal year, and that 74 per cent of Albertans reported that they know someone personally who has been a victim of domestic abuse. Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi won’t immediately seek to take advantage of new federal legislation that would give municipalities the power to ban handguns.
The federal government tabled legislation Tuesday that would allow municipalities to ban handguns through bylaws restricting their possession, storage and transportation. The measures would be backed up with serious penalties to enforce those bylaws, including jail time.

Gibson Block along Jasper Avenue is more than an iconic building it’s also a beacon of hope for those in need of a safe place to stay, says the head of an Edmonton women’s shelter.
The four-storey building in the city’s downtown core has housed the Women’s Emergency Accommodation Centre (WEAC) since 1994. The shelter provides a range of housing programs for women over the age of 18 including acting as an emergency refuge, assisting with transitional housing and finding affordable accommodations.
