When Col. John Hardenbergh arrived in the forest north of Owasco Lake in the summer of 1793 to build his new home, he was not alone. He was accompanied by âHarryâ and âKate,â two enslaved Africans brought to North America against their will and given European names. When Harry and Kate arrived, their roles were clear. Kate would cook, and Harry would perform the manual labor. The earliest history of Auburn, written in 1860 by Henry Hall, tells the story of Col. Hardenbergh, Harry, and Kate traveling into the wilderness, sleeping on the ground, and Harry engaged in the erection of Hardenberghâs log cabin. According to Hall, Hardenbergh did little of the handiwork; it was Harry that felled the first tree and cleared the land. ....

Auburn men's hoops signs Arkansas transfer guard Desi Sills

Tigers coach Bruce Pearl said Wednesday Sills has signed an athletics financial aid agreement.
Sills, who played three seasons with the Razorbacks, has two years of eligibility remaining. The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder averaged 7.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game last season for Arkansas, which advanced to the Elite Eight.
Sills was the only Arkansas player to play in all 98 games over the last three seasons. That makes him the most experienced SEC player coming back next season.
“Desi is a proven winner,” Pearl said. “He’s a fierce competitor and a tough, physical defender. He’s got the ability to create for himself as well as others. Playing in our up-tempo system should bring out the best of him. If he plays as well against others as he did against us, we hit the jackpot.” ....

AUBURN, Ala. (WSFA) - Auburn Universityâs security team has a warning about a man trying to pick up people on and off campus.
Officials say a âsuspiciousâ man tried to give a female a ride on West Magnolia Avenue. A campus advisory was sent out Saturday after the incident.
After the advisory went out, security says three more females reported similar incidents on the same day near Cambridge Hall and off campus on West Glenn Avenue near Tiger Suites and North College Street downtown outside Luxury Nail & Spa. One of the females reported that she initially accepted the ride and that the man took her to another location and tried to kiss her, but she was able to get out and he drove away. ....
