Council authorizes Shelby Public Transit contracts By Sheryl Roadcap - [email protected] SIDNEY Shelby Public Transit contracts for federal and state grant funding and the Elderly and Disabled Fare Assistance Program were authorized Monday evening during Sidney City Council’s teleconference meeting. Details of the two resolutions pertaining to the Shelby Public Transit include the following: • The authorization of the annual application to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) for 2022 operating and capital grant funding, and also to authorize City Manager Mark Cundiff to execute a contract with ODOT upon the approval of the grant application. A federal operating grant of $475,270, and a state operating grant $115,000 is being requested. In capital spending, the total grant request is $237,500. This is for federal and state maintenance and two vehicle replacements. ....
Arbor Day Celebration, tree sale discussed By Sheryl Roadcap - [email protected] SIDNEY The 2021 Arbor Day celebration and the fall tree sale and plantings in the city were discussed during the Sidney Tree Board’s April 15 meeting. The Arbor Day presentation will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 30, at Longfellow Primary School, 1250 Park St. A tulip poplar tree has been selected to be planted by Weigandt. The event will be scaled-down due to COVID-19 restrictions. During the meeting, Brian Green, Sidney street manager/ISA certified arborist, provided members a flier for ceremony. Longfellow School will select students to attend the ceremony. According to meeting minutes, McDonald’s did not respond to the board’s request for coupons for the ceremony; however, Michael Jannides volunteered to provide coupons from The Spot Restaurant. Board Chair Ann Asher invited all members to attend the 20-minute ceremony. ....

Joining Sidney Bicentennial Beer Subcommittee Chair Tony Bornhorst (second from right) were Bicentennial Committee Co-Chair Mike Barhorst (standing), Sidney Parks and Recreation Director Duane Gaier, Moeller Brew Barn Brewmaster Nick Moeller, Fort Loamie Mayor Randy Ahlers, Shelby County Land Bank Director Doug Ahlers, Clinton Township Trustee Jim Gaier, retired Fort Loramie Councilmember Tim Boerger, Chris Boerger, Jolene Ahlers, Nancy Steinke, Shelby County Commissioner Julie Ehemann, Kurt Ehemann, Bicentennial Co-Chair and Shelby County Commissioner Bob Guillozet, Bonita Guillozet, and Sidney City Clerk Kari Egbert. The beer, a pilsner, was created especially for Sidney’s Bicentennial. ....
Thanks for help with Community Christmas Dinner To the editor: The 39th Annual Community Christmas Dinner took place on December 5th as a drive-thru event outside the EMA Building in the Fairgrounds. This was a free meal, open to the entire community. We served 927 meals, of which 146 meals were delivered to homebound individuals. A traditional holiday meal was prepared by The Spot. The Masons from Sidney Temperance Lodge No. 73 whipped up plenty of mashed potatoes. About 75 community volunteers helped with preparing, serving, cleaning up, and delivering meals. Many community leaders and elected officials as well as local boy scouts and girl scouts helped to serve the food. ....
