Educating the elite and squeezing out the rest


Auckland Grammar School is often in the news for the wrong reasons. It is a state school in central Auckland with an awful, and well-deserved, reputation for elitism.
This time the school is opposing proposed changes to enrolment policies which would mean the children of former pupils would not necessarily be able to attend the school – they would have to go into a ballot with other boys from outside the school’s zone. 
This is an outrage to school headmaster (sic) Tim O’Connor who rails against the proposal and is urging his school old boy community to get involved with this consultation process, and “just keep making submissions until the system blows up.” ....

Val Volevach works in freight forwarding; every day she sees the impact of the pandemic on customers trying to shift their products around the world. It s been a busy year, because customers want everything delivered now.
So, out buying some groceries to make chicken wraps for dinner for her partner and three-year-old son, she s philosophical about the prospect of rising prices.
Supermarket shopping is quite a hit on our budget, as much as rent, she says. For our family of three it costs about $150 a week – and I like wine, so that s not counting beverages! ....

Freyberg secure first-innings win over Old Boys


Freyberg seamers Brad Fulton and Ali Akhter took four and three wickets, respectively, giving them an 80-run lead.
Freyberg then scored 193-8 in their second dig and pushed for quick runs, giving them a lead of 273.
Scott Mitchell came close to a century, but was out for 91, caught down the ground. Mitchell had an opening stand of 64 with opener Charles Parker, who scored 33.
Old Boys spinners Trent McGrath and Regan Fleming put the brakes on as McGrath took four 4-57 and Fleming 3-65.
Old Boys then had 41 overs to bat and hung on to be 96-8 at stumps.
Freyberg looked like they were closing in at 55-5 and 83-7, but Old Boys did enough to survive until the end of play. McGrath top scored with 19. ....
