State lawmakers consider Clean Slate that would expunge criminal records


ALBANY — State lawmakers are considering legislation that would automatically seal and expunge most criminal convictions under the proposed Clean Slate Act.
The bill would include a two-step process that would first automatically seal certain traffic infractions and misdemeanors after one year and three years after a felony conviction, as long as the individual is not on probation or parole or is required to register as a sex offender. The conviction record would later be automatically expunged.
A virtual press conference was held Thursday prior to a public hearing of the state Senate’s Standing Committee on Codes to push for passage of the bill. ....

Michigan criminal justice reform act aims to rehab prison inmates for release, help crime victims

DETROIT (FOX 2) - Bipartisan legislation introduced Wednesday in Michigan aims to prepare incarcerated offenders for release while helping crime victims.
The Safer Michigan Act has three goals: to reduce the number of future crime victims, to provide incarcerated people with a sense of hope, and to create safer, more productive communities.
Lawmakers and crime survivors have been working on the seven bills in the act for two years.
Most people who are in prison will be released in the future, meaning that preparing them for release while they are still behind bars is imperative. ....

AP – Carlil Pittman knows trauma firsthand. As the co-founder of the Chicago-based youth organisation GoodKidsMadCity-Englewood, he grieved the loss of Delmonte Johnson, a young community activist, more than two years ago to the very thing the teen fought fiercely against: gun violence.
He’s also been angered and frustrated by the onslaught of stories of Black Americans killed at the hands of police across the nation throughout the past year.
